We begin our forty-day journey of Lent with the observance of Ash Wednesday on February 22nd. The day is so called because of the custom of marking the forehead with ashes in the sign of the cross. Ashes serve as a reminder of our mortality (“remember that you are dust”) and are also a sign of our sorrow for the ways we have fallen short and desire to repent. We will hold two services on that day at 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM, for the imposition of ashes and celebration of Holy Communion. The noon service will be in-person and on Zoom; the 7:00 PM service will be in-person only.
